2020 Introductions from CT Daylily

This year we have 9 introductions---all Tets. I like names that will make you smile-songs that were popular during a point in your life, pop culture, and pets. I also like names that will make you think about what is happening in the world around us--good and bad. All plants have been grown outside without any protection in our Zone 6-5b climate. I am passionate about animals and music, and this is also reflected in some names I have selected.
This year we have an emphasis on how females are treated in today's society in our names, with Know My Name and I am Woman. You should read the descriptions for these. All money from sales of Know My Name will be donated to RAINN--The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. All names have been approved by AHS. Scroll down for more information.

Bombogenesis Howard 2020 Ruffled Strawberry Parfait X Pink Werewolf 6”/33” MLa,Dor,Tet 4 way—20 buds Light pink bitone with a yellow halo, and toothy gold edge. Fertile both ways. Another intro from our Pink Werewolf. The genetics from Pink Werewolf go back (in part) to two really good daylilies from Enman Joiner-Miracle Mama, and its predecessor It's A Miracle. Joiner daylilies have always done well here--even with their mostly Evergreen heritage. The other parent of Pink Werewolf is Bird Talk by Lambertson, which has Kelly Mitchell's Mildred Mitchell as parent. Mildred is in the parentage of 112 intros as of this writing. The pollen parent, Ruffled Strawberry Parfait, the Reckamp-Klehm intro, has produced many fine offspring--77 as of this writing. Bombogeneisis refers to a rapidly intensifying area of low pressure—a bomb cyclone. It has to do with how fast a storm intensifies, not necessarily the ultimate size. I like the way the word rolls off the tongue-lol. This is a good daylily that blooms for a long time. $95

Executive Time Howard 2020 Waggle Dance X Cosmic Blast 4.75”/27”MLa,Dor,Tet 3 way—15 buds White with applique eye outlined in purple with purple edge. Fertile both ways. The first intro from our Waggle Dance, but not the last. Excellent genetics from Hanson, Kinnebrew and Salter lines. Waggle Dance is a cross of Space Coast Sea Shells from Kinnebrew, and Hanson's Cobraskin Necktie--two of the best appliques ever. Salter's very cool Cosmic Blast added some pizzazz.T he notched purple rim that borders the applique will grab your attention. With appliques, as well as many other types of daylilies, the appeal is frequently with how good the contrast is. This one has very good contrast. We all could use a little more executive time to relax and enjoy life. $95/SF

Know My Name Howard 2020 6”/34”-MLa,Dor,Tet 3-4-way,24 buds Wallingford Woolly Bully X Shabby Chic Fertile both ways. Know My Name is another intro from our Wallingford Woolly Bully. It is a sea shell, pale pink blend with a ruffled, toothy edge, and is fertile both ways .It has that Brother Charles glow, which visitors find very appealing. The plant habit is very good with a nice bud count. The name is taken from a novel written by a young woman named Chanel Miller. She was the victim of sexual assault on the campus of Stanford University in 2015. Her attacker, Brock Turner, a member of the swim team, was caught and found guilty. Judge Aaron Persky became the target of a recall after sentencing Turner, who could have faced 14 years in prison, to only six months behind bars. Throughout the trial Chanel was known as Emily Doe. Her book has received many positive reviews. I feel this story is a sad commentary on how society views women today and I hope things change soon. All proceeds from the sale of this plant will be donated to The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) is the largest anti-sexual violence organization in the country. RAINN works to educate the public on sexual violence, providing up-to-date research and statistics on sexual assault. The organization also provides resources and support for sexual assault survivors, including a 24/7 live chat and hotline. 93 percent of every dollar donated goes directly to programs that support survivors and help prevent sexual violence. $75S

Butterfly Jamboree Howard 2020(Pawprints on My Heart X (Bali Watercolor X Tet Lola Branham) 7’/37”-E,Dor,Tet 4 way—25 buds Butterfly Jamboree is a medium orchid bicolor UFo cascade with a darker halo and green throat. Pollen is good—pods difficult. It is a sib to last year’s Butterfly Stampede. Our Pawprints on my Heart has been a good parent for early blooming seedlings with good bud count and branching. Tall and a nice addition to the early garden. The blooms are a little smaller than those of Butterfly Stampede, so they do not get in each other’s way as easily. A UFo cascade. This one and its sib are the only two daylilies I am aware of with Tet Lola Branham in their background. $95

Hasten Down The Wind Howard 2020 Angels Gather Round X (Moment in the Sun X Roger Herr) 5.5”/35” MLa,Sev,Tet 4 way—32 buds Bisque bicolor with ruffled gold edge. Bisque-really? I never know what color to describe a bloom. I get my color descriptions from this site: https://html-color-codes.info/color-names/ This one is fertile both ways with very good branching and bud count. Hardiness –I am not sure what to think. It has a lot of Southern genetics in it. I grew it to clump strength and it did fine every year. Then we lined it out into pots in summer 2018.The pots spent the winter outside under a landscape blanket We had little snow cover and the plants looked very bad in spring 2019. Many did not bloom. By the end of summer they looked pretty good. So what to do? It’s too nice to just compost it. Instead I decided to introduce it with the understanding it may not do well if you are zone 6 or colder. The name comes from a sad and beautiful song by Warren Zevon—later covered by Linda Ronstadt—about a couple drifting apart. Zevon's version of the song features Phil Everly singing harmony vocals; "She's so many women He can't find the one who was his friend So he's hanging on to half her heart He can't have the restless part So he tells her to hasten down the wind" Warren sang some offbeat tunes like Excitable Boy and Werewolves of London". He passed away in 2003 from cancer. $95

Ruffled Strawberry Parfait X FL Briar Patch
4" ”/31” MLa,Dor,Tet
3 way,18 buds

Light yellow with gold green edge and green heart. Pod fertile. Pollen looks sterile but I don’t think I have actually tried it. This is a very pretty toothy bloom with perfect form. Please note it is only about 4" in diameter. While I find this surprising looking at its parents, you just never know how those genes will align. I can't think of too many small flowers with teeth.

The name can mean different things to different people. Remember that old song “The thigh bone’s connected to the hip bone—etc”? If you google the words “Everything is Connected” you can find an array of hits on many concepts, some of which can make you dizzy.

Rather than get carried away here I’ll post these quotes:

“We are all connected; to each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe atomically. We are not figuratively, but literally stardust.” ~ Neil DeGrasse Tyson

“Not everything that happens during the day is an open portending a good or evil development in the future, but everything has meaning to one degree or another, for the world is an ever-weaving tapestry from which no thread can be pulled without destroying the integrity of the cloth. The breadth of Creation makes it impossible for us to step back far enough to see the story that the tapestry tells; the intricacy of it, from the macro to the micro to the subatomic, makes it impossible for us to comprehend the megatrillions of connections between the threads in just one small fragment of the whole.”
― Dean Koontz, Deeply Odd

I Am Woman

PS- just saw this in the news--12-17-19

Research has found that among racially and ethnically diverse countries (characteristics generally negatively correlated with economic growth due to bias, discrimination and conflict), “female leaders were significantly more likely than male leaders to have fast-growing economies,” Susan E. Perkins of the University of Illinois at Chicago Liautaud Graduate School of Business and Katherine W.
Phillips of Columbia Business School wrote in February in Harvard Business Review. Among the most diverse countries, those led by women had an average of 5.4% gross domestic domestic product (GDP) growth in the subsequent year, as compared to those led by men, which had an average of 1.1% GDP growth, according to Perkins and Phillips.

“The important takeaway here,” wrote Perkins and Phillips, “is that female leaders are associated with economic outcomes that suggest that they may be better able to unlock the benefits of diversity at the country level than their male counterparts.” (The researchers cited former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen as exemplars.)

Pink Werewolf X The Dentist
7”/37” MLa,Re,Dor, Tet
4 way, 21 buds

Hot pink with a ruffled, toothy gold edge and yellow green eye zone. Fertile both ways. One of the parents is Pink Werewolf --a 2016 intro of ours that has been a very good parent. I wrote a bit about it under the description of Bombogenesis . Nice branching –and it has instant rebloom here in Zone 6 once established.

So why is a guy introducing a daylily with such a name? Quite simply-- I believe we need more women “in charge”. The name is from a 1971 song by Helen Ready. I was quite surprised that the name had not been taken already.

When I moved to Connecticut in 1968 there was a law that women could not sit at the bar in a pub— really. I still wonder what the Legislature was thinking when that law was passed. The law was changed the following year.

I’d like to say we have come a long way but in many cases women are still considered second class citizens. Women earn about 79 cents per dollar in this country compared with men for the same job.
This is shameful.

Aside from Congress, which never seems to get anything done, you can look at other male dominated organizations like the Boy Scouts and the Catholic Church. The problems are rampant.
I won’t even touch on what happens in other countries.

For the last 10 years or so I have only hired females for my business. I have found that females generally get along better with other employees (and with me) and are more willing to listen to advice. Most importantly, they care more about getting the job done.

The lyrics of Helen Ready’s song state in part:
“I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman”

Let’s get it together and get more females in positions of responsibility—and pay them for it.

OK—off my soapbox. I Am Woman is one of my best this year. Guys—you should buy this one for your wife and score some points!

Put On Your Dancin' Shoes

Howard 2020

Polar Vortex X Totem and Taboo
6.5”/28” MLa,Dor,Tet
2-3 way—15 buds

Light pink with a complex patterned eye. Fertile both ways. I have gotten some cool seedlings from
both of the parents. The pattern on this one will vary. Like many, it seems more prominent in cooler
weather. I think that in time patterns will become more consistent after generations of pattern on
pattern breeding. I have high hopes for its kids.

Put On Your Dancin’ Shoes has a who’s who of hybridizers in its background— De Caire’s Four Beasts in One (parent of her Totem and Taboo), Moldovan’s Vertical Horizon and Emmerich’s Stout Medal winner Entwined in the Vine. If you are breeding for Northern patterns this one is a good addition to your arsenal.

The name comes from a 1979 song by Nigel Olsson, who was a drummer and backing vocalist with
Elton John.
